What is an Anti-Flocculant?Issuing time:2025-08-22 14:06 What is an anti-flocculant? Electrolytes that can increase the zeta potential and reduce the degree of flocculation are called anti-flocculants. In suspensions, due to the presence of free groups on the surface of suspended particles or the adsorption of ions in the solution, the particles carry ions with the same charge, and counterions are distributed around them. Counterions form an adsorption layer or some diffusion layers on or around the particle surface. The potential difference between the adsorption layer and the uniform distribution of positive and negative ions outside the diffusion layer is called the zeta potential. The main function of deflocculation is to solve problems such as the physical stability of particle dispersion systems. Any electrolyte that can increase the zeta potential and reduce the degree of flocculation is called an anti-flocculant. In some suspensions, due to the presence of free groups on the surface of the suspended particles or the adsorption of ions in the solution, the particles carry ions with the same charge, and counterions are also distributed around them. Counterions form an adsorption layer or diffusion layer on or around the particles. Common products include citrate, tartrate, acid tartrate, phosphate, aluminum chloride, etc. Their deflocculating effect is often proportional to the ionic valence of the salt. Compared with flocculation, deflocculation has the following properties: generally, particles exist in a single state; the sedimentation speed is relatively slow; the sediment is formed slowly; the sediment is relatively compact; and the appearance is relatively beautiful. Deflocculation is mainly used to solve the problem of physical stability of some particle dispersion systems. Flocculants and anti-flocculants are generally used in pharmaceutical excipients as filter aids and precipitation accelerators for microcrystalline raw materials, pretreatment agents for pharmaceutical water, clarifiers for sludge dewatering in pharmaceutical factory sewage, adsorbents for heavy metal ions, stabilizers and dispersants for some suspensions, dispersants for the preparation of ultrafine drugs, and fermentation broths of antibiotics, etc. |
